"Carte De L'Hemisphere Austral"

Published by Captain Cook, 1785

This polar projection first appeared in the French edition of Cook's Voyages, based on the travels and chartings of Captain James Cook, the celebrated British explorer.

This reproduction of the original copperplate engraving depicts the travels of Cook, as well as other noted explorers such as Captains Wallis, Talman, Bouvet and Halley; and Commodores Byron and Bouganville.

After discovering the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) in 1778, Cook sailed north searching for the Northwest Passage, a supposed sea route through or around North America. Although his search was unsuccessful, this resulting chart is recognized as a cornerstone of Pacific exploration.
