Finely detailed by engraver J.T. Hammond, this reproduction of "United States" was originally published by Jesse Olney in his "A Practical System of Modern Geography; or, a view of the present state of the world, simplified and adapted to the capacity of youth." The atlas was issued in 1835, at a pivotal time in American history.
The map shows an enormous republic of Texas, bordering on the Missouri territory to the north and Mexico to the west. The Oregon territory, which encompasses the present day states of Washington and Idaho, was yet to be fully explored. In Mexico, the Spanish missions are marked but Los Angeles is conspicuous in its omission.
This magnificent reproduction, which was an enlargement of the original, was published during the first year of the republic of Texas. A legend in the lower right-hand corner compares population in certain townships to that of Hartford, Connecticut.
