"Cuba Insula et Jamaica"

Published by Cornelis Van Wytfliet, 1597

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This reproduction of the beautifully hand-colored copperplate engraving of "Cuba Insula et Jamaica" was originally published by Cornelis Van Wytfliet in 1597 in his Descriptionis Ptolemaicae Augmentum, the first atlas to focus on the mapping of the New World. He named his work an augmentation to Ptolemy's Geography, because it covers the Americas, a part of the world unknown to Ptolemy.

The map shows Cuba, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and a bit of Hispaniola, and it's embellished with a large title cartouche, which features cherubs, fruit and a ram's head.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
