"L'Isle De Cuba"

Published by Rigobert Bonne, 1780

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This detailed reproduction of the copperplate engraving, "L'Isle De Cuba", was originally published in Paris in 1780 by Rigobert Bonne for his Atlas de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre. Bonne, a mathematician, became the official French engineer and marine cartographer, working for the Dépot de la Marine.

The map incorporates the best information available at that time and represents a sophisticated awareness of the island of Cuba. While the overall outline of the island is correct, the many small offshore islands have not been well charted.

As a throwback to earlier mapping conventions, Bonne depicts the principal urban centers and missions with a church icon.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
