"Africae Tabula Nova"

Published by Abraham Ortelius, 1570

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This reproduction of the historically significant 16th century map, "Africae Tabula Nova", by Abraham Ortelius, shows a detailed image of the continent of Africa. Rendered in full color, the map includes an elaborate title cartouche and the obligatory sea monsters and firing ships, characteristics of most maps by Ortelius.

Unlike most mapmakers of his time, Ortelius provided the sources for his cartographic information. However, there are no sources credited for this map, as Ortelius himself supplied his own cartographic findings.

Prior to the 17th century, Africa was explored mostly by Europeans seeking gold and gems. The slave trade changed the picture completely, bringing many more outsiders to the continent.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
