"The Environs of London"
Published by Colton, 1855
This classic map, "The Environs of London", was published by G.W. and C.B. Colton & Co. of New York in 1855. This detailed steelplate engraving shows the city of Greater London and its suburbs during the reign of Queen Victoria, along with the extensive railroad network of the day.
Colton, who published his first atlas in 1855, was an immediate commercial success, and his maps, although once relatively easy to obtain, have become increasingly scarce and inevitably more expensive.
