"The Illustrated Atlas"
Published by John Tallis, 1851
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
This superb reproduction of the original hand-colored steel plate engraving, "The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial & Statistical", was first published by the noted English cartographer, John Tallis, as the title page of his classic work and serves as a fine example of mid-19th century pictorial mapmaking.
The atlas was edited by R. Montgomery Martin, Esq., and the engravings were done by John Rapkin.
Of particular interest here is the exquisite vignette depicting Europeans trading in Africa, as well as the detailed acanthus border. In each corner is a male historical figure, representing the a different part of the world. All are examples of the artistic quality no longer available in contemporary cartographical art.
We custom-print this facsimile page on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
