"Eastern Hemisphere"

Published by John Tallis, 1851

Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016

This superb reproduction of the original hand-colored steel plate engraving, "Eastern Hemisphere", was first published by the noted English cartographer, John Tallis, in his Illustrated Atlas and serves as a fine example of mid-19th century pictorial mapmaking. Generally considered to be the last of the great pictorial mapmakers, Tallis's maps are eagerly sought after by collectors.

Originally published four years prior to the reign of Russia's Alexander the II, this map illustrates Mongolia as part of the China Empire. In 1858, the Russian Tsar would acquire Mongolia from the China Empire with the signing of the Aigun Treaty.

The exquisite vignettes depict the people and animals of the Eastern Hemisphere which were exotic to the Englishman of the day. Each vignette represents observations taken in the area of the hemisphere located directly across from the pictorial.

We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
