"Map of Oregon and Upper California"
Published by Fremont, 1848
This historically significant mapping of John Charles Fremont's expeditions in 1842-46 was published by the order of the United States Senate in 1848. The reproduction map depicts an area from Vancouver Island in the north to San Diego in the south, and from the Great Salt Lake in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west.
Fremont's third expedition was dispatched ostensibly because of the number of settlers migrating west during this period. However, his secret agenda was to assist the effort to acquire California in case of war with Mexico.
