Published by Johannes van Keulen, 1680
This beautiful reproduction map of the Pacific, colored by a later hand, was drawn using Mercator's projection and is criss-crossed by directional lines that were used for navigation. It also shows California as an island which was the accepted view at that time and was shown as such on maps of the world as late as the end of the eighteenth century.
The firm of Johannes van Keulen was a foremost publishing house of sea charts and nautical references during the height of the Dutch sea-faring years.
