"A New And Accurat Map Of The World"
Published by Basset & Chiswell, 1676
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
John Speed was led into cartography by his passionate interest in history and antiquities. A tailor by trade, he had a compelling desire to illustrate "the beautie and benefits" of his native country.
Basset and Chiswell published this landmark map posthumously in 1676, despite the 1651 date on the plate. This reproduction from the original was the first world map published by an Englishman, and it is also significant because it depicts California as an island, a cartographic misrepresentation that lasted nearly 100 years.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
