This fine reproduction of the rare and beautiful global map, "Essay D'une Carte Réduite, contenant Les Parties Connuees Du Globe Terrestre", was published by the Comte de Maúrepas for Jacques Nicolas Bellin, Elder, Hydrographer to the Crown of France, in 1748. It's an excellent view of the world as it was known just prior to the three voyages of discovery of Captain Cook.
In the following three decades, Cook would add much missing information to this map including the Bering Straight, the coastline of New Zealand, the eastern coast of Australia, the west coast of North America and the Hawaiian Islands.
Bellin surveyed all the known coasts of the world after being appointed Ingénieur Hydrographe de la Marine in the French Hydrographic Service. Maúrepas was a French statesman who attempted to apply scientific principles to map making.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years.
