"Typus Orbis Terrarum, Ad Imitationem Universalis Gerhardi Mercatoris"
Published by Quad, 1596
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
Matthias Quad of Cologne published his highly decorative map of the World circa 1596, after an earlier work by Gerhard Mercator. Quad's limited knowledge of the Americas and the Pacific Ocean is self-evident, and he also included the mythical Ptolemic Great Southern Continent.
In this superb reproduction of the original, note the inclusion of a portrait of Jesus Christ in the upper, left-hand portion of the map.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
