"Planiglobii Terrestris Mappa Universalis "
Published by Homann Heirs, 1746
Printed by Lahaina Printsellers, Ltd., 2016
This reproduction of the original beautifully-colored map, published in Nuremberg by Homann's heirs circa 1746, is embellished with engravings of natural phenomena borrowed heavily from a similar map by Adam Zuerner. The two main hemispheres are cartographically up-to-date. The text at the top, within the title cartouches, is commentary on the natural phenomena depicted.
This highly decorative map of the world in hemispheres is one of a five map suite by Johann Baptist Homann, engraver and geographer to the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire and member of the Prussian Royal Academy of Science. It's a classic example from the school of German cartographers.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
