This reproduction of the beautifully hand-colored copperplate engraving of the world in two hemispheres by Pieter Van der Aa, was originally published in 1727. It is one of a five-map suite.
Published half a century before the discoveries of Captain Cook, the map reflects the lack of knowledge of the Pacific region, Australia and the western and Great Lakes regions of North America. The interior of Africa is mostly guesswork as is the representation of California, shown here as an island. The map is enhanced by colorful and dramatic engravings.
We custom-print this facsimile map on waterproof canvas in our Lahaina studio using the finest archival inks, which are tested and guaranteed not to fade or shift under normal circumstances for over 100 years. Modern printing techniques allow us to improve and enhance the historical subject matter, even as we're careful to preserve and maintain its historical and artistic integrity.
