The Cutty Sark was probably the most famous of the ships of her day. She began as a China Tea Clipper and was one of the fastest ships on the sea. She is also well known for having participated in a famous race with the Thermopylae.

Her history was filled with strange and interesting events - including one captain's suicide and another's belief that she was haunted. After 1877, the Cutty Sark no longer transported tea and was put into service carrying Australian wool.

Between 1895 and 1922, she sailed under the Portuguese flag out of Lisbon to New Orleans and Rio. During World War I she was rigged as a three-masted schooner and carried lumber. Captain Dowman bought her in 1922, returned her to England where she was employed as a stationary training ship and served as a reminder of the glory days of sailing.
