This superb reproduction of a finely wrought steelplate engraving "City of Boston" from William Cullen Bryant's PICTURESQUE AMERICA was originally published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, circa 1872-4. Artist, John Douglas Woodward, portrays Boston harbor, with sailors rowing to a barque lying at anchor and sloops at the near dock, brigantines at the far dock; the city itself in the distance. The original engraving is by E.P. Brandard.
