This superb reproduction of a finely wrought steelplate engraving "City of Milwaukee" from William Cullen Bryant's PICTURESQUE AMERICA was originally published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, circa 1872-4.
This beautifully executed steelplate engraving, coloured by a later hand, exemplifies the high point of 19th century intaglio printing and is a testament to William Cullen Bryant's genius. Strollers along the wooded promenade look upon the domes, turrets, spires, and cupolas of the city, which at the time was notable for brewing three million gallons of beer annually.
The artist, Asa Coolidge Warren, is noted for his cityscapes; the engraver responsible for the magnificent foliage is Robert Hinshelwood.
