Mitchell Europe 1860
This superb reproduction of the original antique steel plate engraved “Map of Europe” was published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell of Philadelphia in 1860. Starting in Philadelphia in 1831, Mitchell built a map-publishing empire which, when inherited by his son, employed some 250 people. The coloring is a subtle blend of hand stencil and block printing. It shows the political boundaries, regions, cities, islands, coastlines and important bodies of water as they were known to exist at the time. Samuel Augustus Mitchell began issuing the New General Atlas in 1860. It is one of the most important publications produced during the American Civil War.
