Buache Antartica 1739
This superb reproduction of the original copperplate engraving entitled “Carte Des Terres Australes” was published circa 1739. This chart presents the latest Antarctic discoveries and cartographic theories. This map, like the ‘Piri Reise’ chart, has become famous for depicting Antarctica ice free, relatively accurately, before any formal surveys were able to be conducted leading to some ‘conspiracy theories’ regarding ancient civilizations and lost knowledge. However, the text on this map does list much information regarding ice flows and icebergs in the far southern ocean.
