Cook – Bernard Southern Hemisphere 1785
This superior reproduction of the original copperplate engraving is from the polar projection entitled, “Carte De L’Hemisphere Austral”, originally published in 1785 in the first French Edition of Cook’s Voyages, after an original charting by Captain James Cook. It shows the tracks of Captain Cook, as well as other explorers such as, Captains Wallis, Talman, Bouvet, Halley and Commodores Byron and Bougainville. After discovering the Sandwich Islands in January 1778, Cook sailed north, charting the Pacific coasts and searching for the Northwest Passage, a supposed sea route through or around Canada. Although that quest was unsuccessful, this resulting chart is recognized as a cornerstone of Pacific exploration.
