Vander Aa Planisphere 1710
This superb reproduction of the original antique hand colored copperplate engraved ‘Planisphere” was published by Vander Aa circa 1710. The north polar projection or azimuthal, represents an important step in the history of map making. Considered to be the “first strictly scientific map of the world” it still shows, despite its cartographic sophistication, California as an island. Vander Aa’s map surpasses his predecessors in both artistic and cartographic excellence.
